The COVID‐19 pandemic has companies setting up many new policies and procedures. Many of these are to create a safe, yet comfortable working environment for their employees. Most of these initiatives follow two main factors: operator distancing and more frequent and accurate cleaning of workstations and equipment.
Some companies use their consumer grade cell phones and tablets for reading barcodes and managing equipment, some use industrial android devices with hardened cases and devices are also now available with DRH (disinfectant ready housings) sometimes also called antimicrobial plastic which are specifically made to be cleaned and disinfected repeatedly without the case degrading. These devices are not the same so how do you effectively clean each type and keep employees safe? Here is what you need to know.
Consumer grade devices – Includes Smartphones/Tablets Lysol wipes are still one of the best out of the box solutions to use for cleaning, but you can also use Lysol spray.
- First power the phone down and remove it from its case if it has one.
- Wipe the entire phone down avoiding the ports and let dry for 5 minutes. When spraying the device down let the spray sit for 5-10 minutes if possible.
- Then wipe dry. Use microfiber towels for the wipe down as they do the best job dislodging dirt and grime.
- If it has a case, wipe the case down using the same procedure or let soak in soap and water and then wipe dry.
Commercial grade devices – These types of devices and hardware manufactured by companies like Datalogic, Honeywell and Zebra. First here is a list of approved cleaning solutions from Honeywell but always check you each manufacturers care guide first to verify.
- Diversey® Oxivir TB
- PDI® Sani-Cloth Prime Germicidal Disposable Wipe
- Clorox® Disinfecting Wipes
- Isopropyl alcohol 70%
- PDI® Super Sani-Cloth
- Diversey® Virex II
- Windex® Original by SC Johnson Company
- Acetic acid, 10% in water
- Ethyl alcohol, 10% in water
- Mild soap solutions
Following these instructions for the process:
- Turn off the computer
- Ensure that the battery is properly installed to prevent liquid from entering the device.
- Use a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe, or if using a liquid solution, apply the approved cleaning solution to a sterile cloth. Wring out any excess liquid.
- Wipe all surfaces of the handheld computer with the moistened cloth following the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- Wipe off the scanner window, camera lens, and flash area.
- Do not allow any abrasive material to touch these surfaces.
- Do not allow excess liquid to pool on the device.
- Keep a dry sterile cloth ready to dry the device after cleaning.
- Use a cotton-tipped swab to clean between the buttons and in other recessed areas of the computer.
- The cradle contacts should be cleaned monthly with a cotton-tipped swab dipped in isopropyl alcohol to provide the ideal charger-to-
- Allow the computer to completely air dry before turning on the power and/or placing it in a charger.
Cleaning instructions are the same as DRH (disinfectant ready housings) devices, but the solutions used clean better and faster than what can be used on non-DRH devices. The cases will also last much longer if cleaned frequently. Once any grade of device is disinfected, consumer, commercial or DRH, the screen can be streaked. The display or lens area may be cleaned with a glass cleaner to remove any streaking left from the previous cleaning process. Lightly moisten a lint-free cloth with the approved glass cleaners.
General Take Aways
Do’s
- Shut down the device completely.
- Use a pre-moistened disinfectant wipe, or if using cleaning solution to a clean cloth, microfiber preferred.
- To disinfect scanner/device surfaces use the proper cleaning solution.
- Wipe off the front screen, back of the device, don’t forget the scanner window, camera lens, and flash area.
- If you have silicone handheld/phone covers, take them off and soak in warm, soapy water. Otherwise, give your plastic cases a good wipe down with the cleaning solution.
- Wipe the thoroughly with a microfiber cloth after every use. It will keep the germs, grease, dirt, and sweat away.
Dont’s
- Direct spraying of a liquid cleaning solution or allow excess liquid to pool on the device is strictly prohibited. Moisture or drops of the solution may get inside and damage the internal circuits.
- Never use non diluted bleach or nay other harmful solutions.
- Don’t use a harsh material to wipe the area, no metal, leather, copper infused rags.
- Use a blow dryer to dry up the gadgets. Just air dry. Electronics are sensitive, and the direct application of hot air can damage their delicate components.
- Never turn on the Handhelds if it is not completely dry.
If you made it through this, you now have a doctorate in device cleaning. The important thing to remember is that providing clean, disinfected safe devices to the people you work with not only keeps the employee safe but also increases company productivity.
